Nitroglycerin,
 
richtiger Glycerintrinitrat, gelbliche, ölige Flüssigkeit mit einem Erstarrungspunkt von +13,5 ºC, die durch Nitrierung von Glycerin mit Nitriersäure hergestellt wird. Nitroglycerin explodiert bei Schlag oder Stoß; es darf deshalb nur in Mischungen mit pulverisierten Stoffen oder in Lösungen bis zu einem Gehalt von 5 % transportiert werden. Nitroglycerin ist Bestandteil von Explosivstoffen (z. B. Sprenggelatine).
 
Medizinsche Verwendung:
 
Nitroglycerin wirkt in einer Dosierung von 0,5-1 mg, durch die Mundschleimhaut aufgenommen, nach Umwandlung im Organismus zu Stickstoffmonoxid (Nordosten) venenerweiternd und führt damit zu einer vermehrten Aufnahme von Blut im venösen Teil des Gefäßsystems. Als Folge davon wird der venöse Rückstrom zum Herzen vermindert und damit dessen Sauerstoffverbrauch erniedrigt. Außerdem erweitert Nitroglycerin die Herzkranzgefäße. Es ist deshalb das wichtigste Mittel zur Behandlung eines Angina-pectoris-Anfalls. Als Nitroglycerinpflaster wird die Substanz außerdem zur Vorbeugung eines Herzanfalls (Angina-pectoris-Prophylaxe) sowie als Dauertropfinfusion zur Therapie einer akuten Herzinsuffizienz eingesetzt.
